asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what information he has as to the provision made for monitoring radioactive fallout in the Isle of Guernsey in the event of radioactive emission from a French nuclear-powered generating station.

Mr. Mellor

I understand that air, rainwater and milk samples are regularly collected in Guernsey and Alderney for analysis by the United Kingdom National Radiological Protection Board; and that similar sampling of fish and harbour sediments is carried out in the waters around the islands for analysis by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. in addition, the island authorities have a supply of monitoring equipment for use in nuclear emergencies; and carry out their own programme of daily air sampling and analysis.
