§ Dr. Glynasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what assessment he made of the potential effect on the academic and vocational achievements of the Open University prior to deciding to reduce the public funds available to that institution; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. BrookeNone. The Open University cannot be exempted from contributing to the savings required to reduce public expenditure in accordance with the Government's strategy for economic recovery. My right hon. Friend has asked the Open University visiting committee to assess the university's appraisal of the various options open to it in adjusting to the new grant levels, and the consequences for the university's activities. The visiting committee's report is expected in the autumn.
