HC Deb 11 June 1984 vol 61 cc338-9W
36. Mr. Lyell

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will meet the chairman of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority to discuss policy on the disposal of nuclear waste.

Mr. Waldegrave

My right hon. Friend met the chairman of the UKAEA on 29 February this year and radioactive waste management was discussed. There are no current plans for a further meeting but frequent contacts with the UKAEA take place at official level. The Government's policy on this subject was set out in our 1982 White Paper "Radioactive Waste Management" (Cmnd 8607).

Mr. Frank Cook

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he will supply a list of the names of the people asked for their comments on the draft principles for the disposal of intermediate level radioactive waste, a list of those who responded and a list of the people who sent unsolicited comments.

Mr. Waldegrave

The invitation to submit comments on the draft principles was a general one. A list of the organisations and individuals who had been sent copies of the draft principles in the month following publication was given in a reply to my hon. Friend the Member for Bedfordshire, North (Mr. Skeet), on 24 November 1983 at column249–252. A supplementary list was sent to the hon. Member for Stockton, North on 13 March 1984, and I shall send him a final consolidated list as soon as it can be complied, and annotate it to show the 117 organisations and individuals who submitted comments. A full report on the consultation exercise, listing and summarising comments, will be published at the same time as the definitive statement of principles.
