§ Mr. Kilroy-Silkasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the number of mentally disordered prisoners released at the expiry of their sentence in 1982, 1983 and so far in 1984 because no hospital would accept them; what are their dates of release, ages, sex and convictions; and what further offences they have been convicted of since release.
§ Mr. MellorSince the beginning of 1982, 12 prisoners whose transfer to hospital under the Mental Health Act was pending have been released from prison on the expiry of their sentences. Details are given in the following table. I regret that comprehensive information about offences of which these persons may have been convicted after their release from prison is not available.

§ Mr. MellorBecause of a discrepancy in our records, which has just been detected, we are unable at present to give a precise figure for the number of prisoners suffering from mental disorder who were transferred to hospital in 1983 under the provisions of sections 72 and 73 of the Mental Health Act and sections 47 and 48 of the Mental Health Act 1983. The number is at least 110, but may be slightly higher. I shall write to the hon. Member when the correct figure has been established.
