asked the Secretary of State for Transport whether the chairman of British Rail has submitted to him his review of British Rail Engineering Ltd., including the options for privatisation.

Mr. Ridley

No. I do not expect to receive the review before September.

We have already made it clear that the first priority is to improve BREL's efficiency and its competitiveness to win orders at home and abroad.

BREL's efficiency is already improving. Any options for the longer-term organisation of BREL must be preceded by the further efficiency improvements I have mentioned.
