§ Mr. Dalyellasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (1) what representations Her Majesty's Government have received from the British Publishers Association regarding the ban on the import of books from Argentina for resale; what has been the sense of the representations; what response he has made; and if he will make a statement;
(2) from whom Her Majesty's Government have received representations about the ban on the import of books from Argentina for resale; what has been the sense of the representations; what response he has made; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Channon[pursuant to his reply, 23 July 1984, c. 510]: The Government have received representations from a number of organisations, mainly booksellers, publishers, libraries and certain of their respective associations (but not the British Publishers Association) seeking a further exemption in respect of books for resale from the embargo on the import of goods from Argentina. The response has been that the Government favour a return to normal commercial and economic relations. This is still our wish, but we shall have to consider how to proceed in the light of the failure of the talks in Berne last week.
