HC Deb 02 July 1984 vol 63 c24W
Sir Peter Mills

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what further steps the Government have planned to assist in bringing about a united Cyprus.

Mr. Whitney

We continue to believe that the United Nations Secretary General—whose mandate to pursue his mission of good offices was reaffirmed recently by the Security Council — is best placed to make progress towards a solution to the Cyprus problem. We will, as in the past, do all we can to help him.

Sir Peter Mills

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make it his policy, in seeking to bring about a united Cyprus, to resist pressures from allies of the United Kingdom which work against this aim and are based on defence alliance considerations; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Whitney

Our aim—a peaceful, just and lasting settlement to the Cyprus problem — is shared by our principal allies. The interests of the Alliance are not served by the continuance of the Cyprus dispute.
