§ Sir Geoffrey HoweThis was my first visit to the middle east as Foreign Secretary. I had useful talks with the Heads of State of Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Syria as well as other senior Ministers on ways of making progress towards solutions of the pressing problems of the region. I was particularly concerned to explore the prospects for early progress towards a resolution of the tragic conflict in the Lebanon. I also, of course, discussed the development of bilateral relations with each country.
