HC Deb 24 January 1984 vol 52 cc486-7W
30. Mr. Hunter

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the latest trend in vacancies in the employment market and its implications for future employment prospects.

Mr. Alan Clark

Unfilled vacancies notified to jobcentres in the United Kingdom in December 1983 were 36 per cent. higher than a year earlier.

Although the seasonally adjusted level of vacancies fell in November and December, it is too early to judge the significance of that movement. Nevertheless it is encouraging that the inflow of vacancies to jobcentres has been maintained at its highest level since early 1980; and there are other indications of improvement in the employment situation generally.
