§ Mr. Cyril D. Townsendasked the Secretary of State for Energy what progress is being made in evaluating advanced technologies for the reduction of sulphur emissions from coal-burning power stations.
§ Mr. Giles ShawMy Department, the BCG, the CEGB and the NCB have together initiated two engineering design studies of commercial scale, coal-burning power stations using advanced technologies for the reduction of sulphur emissions. The first design, using a coal gasification plant, builds on British Gas experience with its slagging gasifier at Westfield, while the second, using a pressurised fluidised bed combustor builds on NCB experience with the experimental facility at Grimethorpe. The CEGB is contributing its own engineering and system502W expertise to the two exercises. The two technologies offer the long-term possibility of substantial reductions in sulphur emissions without the cost and energy penalties associated with conventional flue gas desulphurisation. Prepatory work has been underway for some months and formal contracts between the participants were signed on 11 January. The main part of each study will be contracted to private industry within the coming months and the results are expected towards the end of 1985.
