HC Deb 16 January 1984 vol 52 c133W
Mr. Hunter

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what provision is made by his Department to assist persons receiving supplementary benefit to meet the costs of and incidental to attending interviews in connection with applications for employment.

Mr. Boyson

People on supplementary benefit and their dependents can claim payments of benefit for fares to job interviews if they must travel more than 10 miles from home provided that they do not receive assistance from their prospective employer or the Manpower Services Commission. If they have savings of more than £500, the excess must be used first. If it is impracticable to travel to and return from the interview the same day, the cost of overnight lodgings can be claimed. If the claimant attends an interview at the instigation of an officer of the Department his fares can be paid even if the journey is less than 10 miles.
