HC Deb 16 January 1984 vol 52 c133W
Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if Her Majesty's Government accept the United Nations international code of marketing practice for pharmaceuticals.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

So far as I am aware no such code exists. The International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers' Associations, which represents the pharmaceutical industry associations in 48 countries, over half of which are located in developing countries, has recommended to its member associations a code of marketing practices. This includes a procedure for dealing with any breaches of the code brought to its attention. The World Health Assembly has accepted that the IFPMA code should be allowed time to demonstrate its effectiveness.
