asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the latest figure for the number of mentally handicapped children in hospital in England.

At 31 December 1982, the latest date for which provisional figures are available, the number of children under 16 years of age in mental handicap hospitals and units of various sizes in England was 1,629.
