Friend the Secretary of State for Employment indicate that between June 1979 and June 1983, the latest available figures, there was a decrease of 103,000 in the number of employees in employment in the manufacturing sector in Wales — 3,000 in food, drink and tobacco; 7,000 in coal, petroleum and chemical products; 40,000 in metal manufacture; 31,000 in engineering and allied industries; 8,000 in textile, leather and clothing and 13,000 in other manufacturing industries. These figures do not take account of those who are self employed.
Note: Sector decreases do not add up to the total for manufacturing industry as a whole because of rounding.

However, 46,700 manufacturing jobs are promised from allocations of Government factories and offers of selective financial assistance accepted in the period May 1979 to November 1983. A breakdown by industry sectors can only be provided in detail for projects accepting offers of selective financial assistance and is as follows:
