§ Mr. McNamaraasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science when he expects to reply to the letter sent to him on 17 October by the Auxiliary Bishop of Cardiff, representing the Roman Catholic hierarchy on the subject of De La Salle college.
§ Mr. BrookeMy right hon. Friend replied on 23 December 1983.
§ Mr. McNamaraasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he is satisfied that the 79W proposed expansion of primary postgraguate certificate of education places which he envisages at the Liverpool institute of higher education will be sufficient to replace the places lost as a result of the closure of De La Salle college.
§ Mr. BrookeIn agreeing to an additional 20 primary PGCE places being allocated to the Liverpool institute of higher education for 1984, my right hon. Friend's intention was to seek to meet some of the concerns expressed about Roman Catholic teacher training in the north-west, within the framework of a system planned to meet national needs. It was not his purpose to offer direct compensation for the withdrawal of initial teacher training at De La Salle college.
