asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will estimate the number of deaths each year from lung cancer caused by smoking tobacco.

The number of lung cancer deaths in England and Wales in 1982, the most recent year for which figures are available, was 26,156 for men and 8,932 for women. The Royal College of Physicians in its 1983 report has estimated that 90 per cent. of all deaths from lung cancer in this country are attributable to smoking.
