HC Deb 27 February 1984 vol 55 c39W
Mr. Alton

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement, following his meeting with leaders of Liverpool city council, about the setting of a budget for 1984.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

I met a delegation from Liverpool city council on 22 February. I urged the council to budget and rate responsibly for 1984–85. I said that to do otherwise would compound the problems of Liverpool and have very serious consequences for the councillors themselves, for the council's staff and for the provision of services for the people of Liverpool. I issued a Statement following the meeting, and a copy of this is in the Library.
