HC Deb 23 February 1984 vol 54 cc597-8W
Mr. Norman Hogg

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what information he has as to the number of foreclosures on house purchases in each of the housing authorities in the past 12 months.

Mr. Ancram

Local authorities submit annual returns to my Department only in respect of houses for which they themselves have provided mortgage finance. In 1982–83, the latest period for which returns are available, reposessions took place as follows:

custodial sentences; how many were given suspended sentences; how many were committing crime other than for the first time; how many parents were prosecuted on behalf of their children under the legal age; how heavy were the penalties; and how many parents did not pay the fines.

Mr. Ancram

The offence commonly known as "mugging" is classified as robbery in the statistics collected by my Department. The table shows the number of persons against whom the main charge proved was robbery. Suspended sentences are not given by Scottish courts. Information on previous convictions is not centrally available. Parents are not prosecuted on behalf of their children in Scotland.

Local Authority Number of Repossessions etc.

Dunfermline District Council 1
City of Glasgow District Council 72
Inverclyde District Council 5
Monklands District Council 2

Other authorities which have submitted returns have not repossessed any houses. A number of returns are still outstanding.
