asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether any experimental programmes on animals are carried out on a joint basis with the United States authorities in (a) the United Kingdom, (b) the United States of America and (c) elsewhere in the world.

Mr. Lee

No. In the normal course of business establishments may discuss programmes with colleagues overseas. Establishments do not, however, undertake joint programmes involving the use of animals.

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many rhesus monkeys have been killed in experiments at Porton Down over the past five years; and what was the nature of the experiments.

131 rhesus monkeys have been used in experiments at the Chemical Defence Establishment, Porton Down over the past five years. They were used in experiments connected with the chemical defence programme.

No experiments are conducted on animals to test the effectiveness of biological, or any other weapons.
