HC Deb 16 February 1984 vol 54 c315W
Mr. Pawsey

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what action he takes in respect of any country which impedes British exports by unfair means such as tariffs, extraordinary measures, non-tariff barriers and special arrangements.

Mr. Channon

Each case has to be pursued differently on its merits. But the Government pursue their rights under the GATT when appropriate. In other cases it is for the Commission to initiate action. The Government take appropriate action in the Community to secure such action by the Commission. It is not always possible to secure a satisfactory outcome in cases of the kind my hon. Friend has in mind, but every effort is made to do so. If my hon. Friend has a specific case in mind, I would welcome details.
