asked the Secretary of State for Transport what studies have been made of the effect on traffic noise of a concrete road surface.

Many studies have been carried out by the transport and road research laboratory and others of the effects on traffic noise of a wide range of road surfaces including concrete roads. These studies have examined the effects of different surface textures and a direct relationship has been established between traffic noise and skidding resistance. These have been reported by TRRL, notably in the following publications:

  • TRRL Laboratory Report LR 896—"Road Surfaces and Traffic Noise".
  • TRRL Supplementary Report SR 340 — "Research on skidding resistance at the Transport and Road Research Laboratory".
