HC Deb 09 February 1984 vol 53 cc700-1W
Sir Brandon Rhys Williams

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will publish a table showing percentage adult unemployment rates in the United Kingdom for each year since 1954.

Mr. Alan Clark

The following table gives the available information for Great Britain at July for each year since 1975.

Adult unemployment rates (18 years and over): Great Britain
Registered unemployed Unemployed rate
1975 3.8
1976 5.0
1977 5.5
1978 5.3
1979 4.9
1980 6.3
1981 10.4
1982 12.0
Claimant unemployed 1983 12.1

The unemployment rate expresses the number unemployed in the age group as a percentage of the estimated number of employees — both employed and unemployed—in that age group.

Employment estimates by age are not available for 1973 and 1974 and this prevents the calculation of an adult unemployment rate for these years. Although employment estimates by age are available prior to 1973, they are not consistent with current figures. The calculation of an adult rate using these figures could be done only at significant cost.

Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will provide figures for the past 10 years, showing the number of people employed.

Mr. Alan Clark

The following table gives the total numbers of employees in employment in the United Kingdom in September each year from 1974 to 1983, the latest available.

Mr. Janner

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the number of those aged 16, 17, 18 and 19-years-old, respectively, who are unemployed and not registered for a Government training course (i) in the east midlands and (ii) in the Leicester travel-to-work area.

Mr. Alan Clark

The information is not available. The regular monthly count does not distinguish claimants other than by age, sex, duration of unemployment and whether they are a school or full-time education leaver.
