Ms. Clare Short

asked the Secretary of State for Employment, pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for Stoke on Trent, Central (Mr. Fisher) Official Report, 17 November, c. 550, what is his estimate for the date of completion of the analysis of managing agents and sponsors; and if he will publish it when complete.

Mr. Peter Morrison

The analysis of information generated by the survey of schemes is nearly complete and it is hoped to place a report on the survey's findings in the Library before the end of the month.

Mr. Janner

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the number of persons who (a) are unemployed and (b) who have been unemployed for over 12 months in (i) the East Midlands and (ii) the Leicester travel-to-work area; and if he will give figures for May 1979 and the percentage difference in each case.

Mr. Alan Clark

The following table gives the figures for registered unemployed in April 1979—analysis by duration not available for May—and October 1982 and the figures for unemployment claimants in October 1982 and October 1983, the latest date for which an analysis by duration of unemployment is available. The October 1983 figures are affected by the provisions announced in the 1983 Budget, which meant that some men aged 60 and over no longer had to sign on.
