Mr. Skinner

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what pilot or research projects his Department is currently supporting in the following areas of alternative industrial uses for coal: (a) liquefaction, (b) gasification, (c) combined heat and power and (d) fluidised combustion.

Mr. Giles Shaw

My Department is currently supporting the following activities related to alternative industrial uses of coal:—

  1. (a) Liquefaction
    1. (i) the design of the NCB's 2½ tonne/day coal liquefaction pilot plant, with the offer of support for construction.
    2. (ii) the design and construction of a 24 kg/day small process development unit at Essen under the auspices of the IEA for the pyrolysis of coal to oil and gas.
  2. (b) Gasification
    1. (i) an engineering design study of a commercial scale power station using the BGC/slagging gasifier.
    2. 592
    3. (ii) coal pyrolysis unit [see a(ii)]
  3. (c) Combined Heat and Power the demonstration of anindustrial CHP installation using a coal fired fiuidised bed.
  4. (d) Fiuidised Combustion
    1. (i) operation of the pressurised fluidised bed facility at Grimethorpe under the IEA programme.
    2. (ii) an engineering design study of commercial scale power station using a pressurised fluidised bed boiler.
