asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will make a statement about the Advisory Council on Energy Conservation.

The Advisory Council on Energy Conservation published its fifth report on 14 December 1983. This wide-ranging report was extremely helpful in identifying the major potential for future improvements in energy efficiency. With the completion of this report, the council has fulfilled its remit with success and distinction. I have therefore decided not to renew council members' appointments which expired on 31 December 1983. However I am delighted that Dr. Telfer, until recently chairman of the council, has agreed to become one of the five marketeers who have just been appointed to advise the Energy Efficiency Office and myself.
