§ Mr. Cohenasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what financial, administrative and legal arrangements he proposes, following the abolition of the Greater London council, to enable the accommodation of single homeless persons from one borough in another borough.
§ Sir George YoungUnder section 9 of the Housing (Homeless Persons) Act 1977, local housing authorities have a duty to render such reasonable assistance as may be requested by other authorities in carrying out their relevant functions under the Act, including securing accommodation in certain circumstances. After abolition of the GLC, we propose that it will be for the Boroughs to agree whatever further arrangements they consider appropriate.
§ Mr. Cohenasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what arrangements will be made following the abolition of the metropolitan counties in respect of provision to meet the needs of the single homeless.
§ Sir George YoungThe councils of the metropolitan districts are the local housing authorities for their areas. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Home Department has asked the councils of the metropolitan counties for details of the grants they make to voluntary organisations, including any concerned with provision for the single homeless.
