Mr. Weetch

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the total amount of money invested in gilt-edged securities by building societies in the most recent available financial year.

Mr. Ian Stewart

The report of the Chief Registrar 1981–1982 shows that for 1982, the latest year for which aggregate figures from building societies' annual returns are available, the book amount of gilt-edged securities held by societies with assets exceeding £2 million totalled £8,158 million. Purchases in the year were £6,282 million (at purchase price) and the proceeds of sales and redemptions were £4,699 million.
