HC Deb 02 February 1984 vol 53 c324W
37. Mr. Gould

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he is satisfied with the operation of the European Economic Community sheepmeat regime.

Mr. MacGregor

The sheepmeat regime has substantially benefited British producers, through the variable premium on fat lambs and the annual premium on breeding ewes, and British consumers, through the use of deficiency payments rather than intervention and by maintaining access to supplies of New Zealand lamb at a reduced tariff rate. There have been difficulties over our exports, however, and we shall be seeking improvements in this respect during the discussions on the Commission's review of the regime.
