Ms. Richardson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the annual rate and number of illegitimate births, births within eight months of marriage and abortions, for girls aged 12, 13, 14, 16, 17, 18 and 19 years by year from 1968 to 1982.

Notes

  1. 1. The table covers all pregnancies conceived outside marriage which led to: an illegitimate live or still birth; a legitimate live or still birth within 8 months of marriage; or an abortion.
  2. 2. So that the figures for the different outcomes of conception can be compared with each other and aggregated, each case is classified according to the year and the woman's age at the date of conception.
  3. 3. The date of each conception is estimated to be: for live births 38 weeks before the date of confinement; for stillbirths—the stated duration of pregnancy before the date of confinement; for abortions the gestation period less 2 weeks before the date of termination.
  4. 4. Figures based upon years of conceptions are not available for 1968 and are not yet available for 1982.
