§ 28. Mr. Wigleyasked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will increase the availability of assistance to employers for taking on apprentices to a level such that any young person who wishes to take a formal apprenticeship can get as much financial support for the duration of the apprenticeship as he or she would get if employed on Manpower Services Commission job creation schemes.
§ Mr. Peter MorrisonWidespread support for the first year of recognised apprentice training is already provided by the Government under the youth training scheme.
Responsibility for the level of recruitment of apprentices and for training beyond the first year rests with employers, as set out in the White Paper "Training for Jobs" (Cmnd. 9135).
