HC Deb 13 December 1984 vol 69 c593W
Mrs. Dunwoody

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what proportion of United Kingdom aid to Zimbabwe was spent on seconding foreign consultants in each of the last four years.

Mr. Raison

None.

Mrs. Dunwoody

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how much was spent on aid to Zimbabwe in each of the last four years; and of that sum how much and what percentage was spent on health care, education and the secondment of foreign consultants in medicine and surgery.

Mr. Raison

British aid to Zimbabwe in the last four years was as follows:

£ million
1980 36.405
1981 17.132
1982 21.464
1983 19.590
Total 94.591

Neither health nor education are sectors which the British and Zimbabwe Governments have identified as priority ones for British aid. Of the total, £35,000 (0.04 per cent.) was spent on health care and £1.3 million (1.6 per cent.) on education. None of it was spent on the secondment of foreign consultants in medicine and surgery. A substantial part of a £12 million grant for reconstruction and a £20 million grant for land resettlement has been used by the Zimbabwe authorities to provide facilities such as schools and clinics, but the precise figures are not readily available.
