Sir Geoffrey Howe

The Heads of State and Government of the European Community reaffirmed in Dublin their desire to see urgent efforts made to establish peace and stability in the middle east, and their willingness to assist efforts to that end. We shall continue to do all we can to encourage negotiated solutions. My right hon. Friend the Prime Minister held talks with King Hussein earlier this week, and I discussed the middle east with Mr. Shultz yesterday. But it must be for the parties themselves to take the initiative in peace efforts.
