HC Deb 11 December 1984 vol 69 c451W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what information he has concerning expenditure upon and allocation of personnel to research into acquired immune deficiency syndrome in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Brooke

I refer my hon. Friend to my reply on 26 November, at column 389, to the hon. Member for Islington, South and Finsbury (Mr. Smith). The Medical Research Council's research referred to in that reply is being carried out at three centres in London and one in Manchester. I understand that a total of eight scientists are receiving grant support, which also provides the salaries for eight support staff as well as laboratory expenses and equipment.

It is possible that research work relevant to AIDS is also being conducted in universities and medical schools, financed from the block grant to universities allocated for teaching and research on advice from the University Grants Committee.
