asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many applications from district councils to adopt the model by-laws on straw and stubble burning have been received by the Home Office as at 1st August 1984; how many have been approved; how many have been revised and how many are still being processed by the department.

The position as at noon on 30th July was as follows:

(a) Number of applications received for confirmation of by-laws .. .. .. 141
(b) Number of applications approved .. 130
(c) Number of defective applications returned to local authorities for revision 11
(d) Outstanding applications .. .. NIL
In addition, provisional approval has been given to the by-laws proposed by a further 48 authorities, and it is expected that these will shortly be submitted for confirmation.
