HL Deb 01 August 1984 vol 455 c864WA
Lord Brocket

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they consider that obstruction caused by National Union of Mineworkers pickets constitutes a threat to law and order and to freedom of the individual, and what action they propose to take.

Lord Elton

The large and often violent assemblages which have taken place in recent weeks have been designed to prevent people exercising their freedom to go to work. They have certainly resulted in serious breaches of the peace on many occasions. It is for the police to deal with these acts, and to maintain the freedom of people who wish to go to work to do so. They have done so with conspicious success.
