§ Mr. Spearingasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will estimate the number of persons born in the colony of St. Helena now resident in, or visiting, the United Kingdom, respectively.
§ Mr. WaddingtonThe information requested is not available.
§ Mr. Spearingasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will tabulate the number of persons from St. Helena admitted to the United Kingdom with permission to seek or take up employment for each of the years 1979 to 1983; and what change of entry rule in respect of such persons was made during this period, together with its stated purpose.
§ Mr. WaddingtonThe immigration rules provide that, subject to certain exceptions, a person wishing to come here to take employment must have a work permit. The criteria for the issue of such permits are matters for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Employment. In 1983 four British Dependent Territories citizens from St. Helena were admitted for employment. They held work permits. Statistics for earlier years are not readily available.
