§ Ms. Harmanasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many persons in the year 1983 were remanded in custody on charges for non-imprisonable offences; and how many persons there are in each category.
§ Mr. Mellor[pursuant to his reply, 6 April 1984, c. 682]: The exceptions to the right of bail for persons 427W charged with non-prisonable offences are to found in part II of schedule 1 to the Bail Act 1976. Remand information for non-imprisonable offences cannot easily be obtained from the classification of offences used when recording remand decisions. The classification is by statute and the maximum sentence which can be imposed will vary with the individual section of the act under which the person is charged. However, an attempt is being made to estimate the number of persons remanded in custody for nonimprisonable offences and I shall write to the hon. Member when this work has been completed. Information is not collected centrally on the reasons for remands in custody.
