§ 26. Mr. Cartwrightasked the Secretary of State for Transport what arrangements he proposes to make for the continued operation of the Woolwich ferry in the event of the abolition of the Greater London council.
§ Mrs. ChalkerIt is typical and quite unfounded scaremongering for the GLC to suggest that the ferry's future is threatened. I am currently considering the most appropriate arrangements for its operation after the GLC is abolished.
§ Mr. Spearingasked the Secretary of State for Transport when and to whom he has given an undertaking respecting the future of the Woolwich free ferry; and if he intends it to remain free to users.
§ Mrs. ChalkerAs part of its propaganda campaign, the GLC is using ratepayers' money to finance a variety of advertisements and leaflets solely designed to mislead and alarm Londoners. Woolwich ferry has been subject to this misleading propaganda. Many people have been quite unnecessarily worried about the ferry's future. They have no cause for concern. The ferry will continue in service after the abolition of the GLC and I have no plans whatsoever to introduce charges.
