HC Deb 09 April 1984 vol 58 c113W
Mr. Skinner

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the total cost to the National Health Service of training a doctor.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

It is not possible to identify separately the cost to the National Health Service of training a doctor. However, an estimate based on a comparison of the costs of teaching and non-teaching hospitals suggests that the cost to the NHS of undergraduate medical training is of the order of £70,000 per doctor. This sum may include some costs arising from the concentration of specialised services in teaching hospitals which are not directly attributable to teaching.
