HC Deb 04 April 1984 vol 57 c576W
Mr. Terlezki

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what status is accorded to the Ukraine by Her Majesty's Government.

Mr. Rifkind

We recognise the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic as a constituent republic of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

Mr. Terlezki

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the implication for the United Kingdom of the Ukraine being elected to the United Nations Security Council.

Mr. Whitney

The Ukraine's election to the Security Council in no way affects our attitude to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic and does not imply recognition of it as an independent state.
