HC Deb 04 April 1984 vol 57 c592W
Mr. McKelvey

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services, how many people are discharged from hospitals annually suffering from schizophrenia; and what provision is being made to accommodate them in the community.

Mr. John Patten

In 1982 a total of 24,594 people were discharged from English mental illness hospitals and units who had been admitted with a diagnosis of schizophrenic psychosis (that is diagnosis in the international code ICD 2950/2959); of these 19,717 had had stays of less than three months. National statistics do not record whether they were still suffering from an illness at the time of discharge, or what accommodation they went to in the community. Authorities are providing a range of residential care, day care and domiciliary services for people who have been or are suffering from mental illness, and the amount and range of these provisions is increasing though there are still many gaps.
