§ Mr. Concannonasked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list (a) all United Kingdom voluntary organisations currently in receipt of social fund assistance and (b) those voluntary organisations which have unsuccessfully applied to the social fund during the last two years; and if he will indicate what percentage of applications from voluntary organisations have resulted in assistance from the European social fund for each year since it began in the United Kingdom.
§ Mr. GummerThere is no formal definition of a voluntary organisation for European social fund purposes. In practice the Department of Employment classifies registered charities and similar bodies (but not limited companies) as voluntary organisations. On this basis, the following voluntary organisations are receiving, or have been allocated, assistance from the fund for 1983:
- Lady Margaret Hall Settlement, Lambeth
- Liverpool Society for Mentally Handicapped Children
- York Horticultural Project for Mentally Handicapped People
- Community Projects Foundation, Dundee
- Bradford Cathedral Centre
- Dartington North Devon Trust
- Community Services Volunteers (GB and N Ireland: 2 allocations)
- Liverpool Victoria Settlement/Netherfield Road Methodist Church
- Liverpool Elfrida Rathbone Community Centre
- Liverpool Personal Service Society
- Tower Hamlets Training Forum
- Camden Committee for Community Relations
- Tower Hamlets Advanced Technology Training
- Lambeth Women's Workshop
- South Glamorgan Women's Workshop
- East Leeds Women's Workshops
Two voluntary organisations unsuccessfully applied to the European Commission for assistance in 1983; they were:
- Liverpool Personal Service Society (which also had a successful application); and
- Royal Society for Mentally Handicapped Children and Adults.
No voluntary organisations made unsuccessful applications in 1982.
In 1983 there were 18 applications, of which 16 received allocations (89 per cent.). The 1982 percentage was 100 per cent. Records are not kept in a suitable form to calculate the figure for earlier years, except at disproportionate costs.
