§ Mr. MellorIn response to our invitation for comments on the White Paper we have received 21 letters from universities and teaching hospitals, 19 from scientific or professional socieities, 19 from companies or trade organisations, 12 from national animal welfare organisations or anti-vivisection societies and 10 from other bodies. We have also received 200 letters from hon. Members and about 1,500 from members of the public. The responses reveal a welcome endorsement of the Government's general proposals and confirm our belief that new legislation should be introduced as soon as the parliamentary timetable permits.
