§ Mr. HurdOne completely new prison has been opened since June 1979 — Her Majesty's prison Frankland, Brasside, Durham. Substantial additions have also been made to existing establishments such as those to Her Majesty's prison Highpoint, Stradishall, Suffolk, and HMYC Hollesley Bay, Woodbridge, Suffolk, both of which were opened within the last year.

§ Mr. HurdAbout 2,000 new inmate places have been provided through the prison building programme since June 1979. Temporary losses of existing accommodation for refurbishment and redevelopment mean that the nett addition to available places has been slightly less than half this number.

§ Mr. HurdFour new prisons are currently being built and are expected to be completed between 1984 and 1986. 687W Six others are at various stages of design, and should be completed in later years up to the early 1990's. We are at present considering possible additions to this programme. Apart from building new prisons we are also undertaking a substantial programme of redevelopment at existing establishments.
