Mr. JamesLamond asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether, in the light of his Department's recent announcement that the increase in the main rate of grant for 1984–85 will be 4 per cent., he will be giving the same advice to educational institutions in regard to limiting increases in hall fees to that percentage as was given on 9 November 1982, Official Report, c. 415.
§ Mr. BrookeYes. It is the Government's policy that institutions, taking one year with another, should balance108W the costs of catering and residence with the charges levied, but I hope that increases in hall fees for 1984–85, like the increases in the main rates of grant for that year, will reflect the Government's success in holding down the rate of inflation.
