HC Deb 20 December 1983 vol 51 c107W
41. Mr. Winnick

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will now make a statement on his decision on the future of the west midlands college of higher education.

Mr. Brooke

As my right hon. Friend stated yesterday in his reply to a question from my hon. Friend the Member for Birmingham, Hall Green (Mr. Eyre) he has accepted the advice of the National Advisory Body on the provision to be made in 1984–85 in the local authority sector of higher education. He has accordingly informed the Walsall local education authority and the west midlands college of higher education that with effect from 1984–85 there will be no intakes to courses at the college other than to courses of initial and in-service teacher training. The future role of the college as an institution devoted to teacher education will be subject to review along with that of other colleges next year.
