HC Deb 12 December 1983 vol 50 c323W
Mr. Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what steps he takes to ensure that facing bricks used on houses in Scotland are capable of withstanding Scottish climatic conditions; what bricks are so approved; and where these are manufactured.

Mr. Ancram

The choice of facing bricks is a matter for designers, builders, or their clients to determine, taking account of climatic and other conditions. The Building Standards (Scotland) Regulations 1981 require that all materials used in the construction of any building are suitable for their purpose. Compliance with a relevant British Standard is normally deemed to satisfy this requirement. Facing bricks capable of meeting this standard are manufactured in Scotland.
