HC Deb 12 December 1983 vol 50 c323W
Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he has any plans to outlaw labour only subcontracting in the construction industry in Scotland; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Ancram

My right hon. Friend has no such plans.

Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he is satisfied with the current legislation on lump labour in the construction industry in Scotland; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Ancram

My right hon. Friend is satisfied that the current legislation on labour-only subcontracting is operating successfully in Scotland.

Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what plans Her Majesty's Government have to reduce unemployment in Scotland in the construction industry; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Ancram

The best prospects for the construction industry lie in the Government's overall policy of creating a sound economy as a basis for industrial recovery.

Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many construction workers were employed in the industry in Scotland at the latest available date; and what were the figures for June 1979.

Mr. Allan Stewart

The estimated numbers of employees in employment in the construction industry in Scotland in June 1983 and June 1979 are 121,000 and 163,000 respectively.
