HC Deb 26 April 1983 vol 41 c297W
Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he supports the United States of America view that Soviet SS20 missiles in the far east should be considered in the context of the current intermediate nuclear forces negotiations; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Pym

Yes. The NATO countries believe that limits on intermediate range nuclear missiles should apply globally. The SS20 missiles are mobile and could be transplanted across the Soviet Union in a short time; in addition they can target western Europe from Asian sites well to the east of the Urals; nor do the NATO countries wish to transfer the threat posed to them by SS20s to their friends in the far east.
