§ Mr. John Townendasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he is yet able to make the further announcement about fees for overseas students that he promised on 30 March, Official Report, Vol. 40, c. 347.
§ Sir Keith JosephIn my statement of 30 March I said that it was the Government's intention to maintain the well-established position concerning the payment of higher fees by overseas students and that I would make a further announcement as soon as possible as to how this should be done. To ensure that the position is clear for the next academic year, the Government intend to legislate and I have today introduced the Education (Fees and Awards) Bill to that end. This Bill also covers the similar needs which exist in relation to the eligibility rules adopted by a variety of award-making bodies for certain discretionary student awards.
